Identifying a male Gadwall is an accomplishment. Look for a gray duck with a contrasting black bill and rump. Though he isn’t flashy in his breeding plumage, a good look through your binoculars will reveal his exquisite and intricate markings. The female has a lighter-colored bill, no black rump, and simpler markings on her body feathers.
Gadwalls are among the few duck species that remain in the lagoon over the summer to raise their fluffy little ducklings.
