Anytime you’re looking for free things to do in San Diego, see what’s happening at Nature Collective. We offer free nature tours and family days. For other events, like a film screening, there’s an admission price that lets us offer these experiences.

Our activities are for anyone in town – from locals to tourists – and for visitors of all ages.

Great Backyard Bird Count

Join nature enthusiasts to participate in a global community science bird count. Locally, your setting for the Great Backyard Bird Count will be San Elijo Lagoon. All ages and skill levels are welcome. If you are a beginning birder, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher.

Wildlife Tour

Experience San Diego wildlife in a fresh way – both freshwater and saltwater environments are within reach. Volunteers Elizabeth Venrick + Bob Chaddock lead your nature walks.

Whether you’re interested in birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, or invertebrates, the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve has 1,000+ species to learn about – and spot in their natural habitat. Join us for a new adventure every month!

Family Fun Day

Come one, come all to our monthly lagoon learning day! Enjoy hands-on activities, from craft-making to animal encounters. Nature gets the spotlight with Nature Collective volunteers and San Diego County Parks + Recreation rangers with family-friendly stations, live presentations, and more. Every month, the Nature Collective features a new topic for all the fun.

Each Family Fun Day includes TRACK Trails activity guides. Plus, young attendees can earn a Junior Ranger badge.

Discovery Tour

Discover the beauty of San Elijo Lagoon: where fresh water and salt water meet and mix, where migratory and resident birds share a sanctuary, where many animals find a home.

The Nature Collective guided tour with naturalist Mike Blanco will inspire you to watch and listen for a variety of birds that rest in – and fly across – the salt marsh and mudflats. No matter the season, you can enjoy, photograph, and identify a host of native plants. Our Nature Center Loop Trail is accessible, providing fun for all. Look forward to a new discovery each month!

Bird count volunteers follow specified routes throughout designated areas in and around San Elijo Lagoon, counting every bird they see or hear. If you are a beginning birder, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher.

Trails + Ales

Our popular Trails + Ales Series is back! This exciting 6-month series explores six unique San Diego County trails and partner ale houses. Join Nature Collective, San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy, Volcan Mountain Foundation, Escondido Creek Conservancy, San Diego Canyonlands, and Hike San Diego as we experience San Diego County together.

The Confessional by Lost Abbey will offer registered Trails + Ales Series participants a flight of three 4-oz tasters. Choose from one of their 18 taps featuring traditional, seasonal, or non-denominational craft brews.
