A Lava-Inspired Story, With Kids Who Connect with Us​

Our Scientific Research Director, Tim Stillinger, returned to his own first school, Cardiff Elementary, and talked with 3rd graders about the different types of birds at San Elijo Lagoon, how tides flow in and out, and why healthy waters matter.

The kids were excited about the “floating excavators” Tim described as part of the lagoon restoration. Tim shared that the excavators can travel through mud, float on water, and cross over land.

A kid asked, “What about lava, can it go through lava?”

Tim smiled, and exclaimed, “You got me on that one! No, not on lava.”
