The San Diego Foundation’s Opening the Outdoors Grant Awards Us with $40,000 for Youth in Nature + Leadership

The San Diego Foundation, in continued support of our youth leadership initiatives, has recently granted us $40,000 in their 2019 Opening the Outdoors grant announcement.

Escondido Union School District students in grades 4 and 5 are provided with outdoor nature experiences. Nature Collective partners with San Diego Zoo, Friends of Cardiff + Carlsbad State Beach in these outdoor experiences.

“I like the sound of the clear shiny water flowing between the rocks.”
– Student on Field Trip

Some of the greatest influences on kids are positive childhood experiences in natural areas, and school-based learning that provide opportunities for students to take action.

“It’s so great to spend time with my son with both us learning at the same time.”
– Chaperone/Mom of Elementary Student on Field Trip

The Opening the Outdoors grant renewal supports this important work within the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve. It also expands opportunities for Escondido middle and high school student mentorships through our summer camp + weekend family experiences that explore the Escondido Creek watershed.

This year: we are providing training and support for San Pasqual high school students that will prepare them to help lead Nature Collective-organized family weekend nature hikes and restoration activities, and participate in our seasonal Family Discovery Days for all.

Back in the classroom, students explore environmental problems in their own community, brainstorm solutions through conservation projects, and share their projects with peers and the community. Our curricula is aligned with California State Next Generation Science Standards.

With partnerships like The San Diego Foundation, we can better connect, educate, and engage students to act to ensure the health and wellbeing of their watershed.

Thank You:
