San Diego Pocket Mouse

Chaetodipus fallax

The San Diego Pocket Mouse looks very similar to the California Pocket Mouse, however, their ears are smaller and rounder. Fur-lined cheek pouches make it possible for the San Diego Pocket Mouse to conserve the moisture in seeds, which is why they are able to stay hydrated from seeds and not need to drink water. They are active year round but tend to spend their days in their burrows, usually only coming out at night to forage for food.

Fun Fact:
Doesn’t need to drink water to survive

What’s for Lunch:
Seeds, but occasionally leaves, stems and insects.

Where’s Home:
A variety of habitats, including coastal scrub, grasslands, and desert scrub.
