Southern Mule Deer

Odocoileus hemionus fuliginatus

The Mule deer is one of the few large native herbivores left in North America. The subspecies you may see in the reserve is the Southern Mule deer, which has a darker, sootier coat than other subspecies. The name “Mule deer” refers to its large ears and sturdy physique—as compared to more slender species of deer.

Fun Fact:
Every spring, male mule deer grow a brand new set of antlers, each one larger than the last.

What’s for Lunch:
Meadow grasses, leaves, berries, fruit, twigs, and buds

Where’s Home:
Eastern parts of the reserve, in freshwater marsh or riparian scrub
