Western Fence Lizard

Sceloporus occidentalis

On any visit to the reserve, you’re likely to see the Western fence lizard running along a trail or sunning itself on rocks, posts, and yes, fences. Males have electric blue patches on their throats and bellies, which they flash as a warning to rival males and as an invitation to passing females. From above, those patches are invisible; when these lizards sit very still, they virtually disappear among the rocks and sand.

Fun Fact:
A cold lizard is a slow lizard, which is why this one is often seen basking in the sun on fences, rocks, and posts.

What’s for Lunch:
Insects and spiders

Where’s Home:
Chaparral and coastal sage scrub
