Wrentit

Chamaea fasciata

Wrentits are known as the “Voice of the Chaparral” for their whistling call, heard pretty much anywhere you find the chaparral plant community. Wrentits are common in the reserve and all along the Pacific Coast, but since they tend to skulk quietly through the chaparral, they’re easy to miss. Look for a pair of plump, grayish-brown birds with long cocked tails and white eyes.

Fun Fact:
Once they choose a mate, these residents of the chaparral become the sort of couple that does everything together.

What’s for Lunch:
Insects and spiders gleaned from twigs and bark, plus fruits and seeds

Where’s Home:
Chaparral, year round
